What Is Google My Business?

Google My Business (GMB) is a free tool that lets you manage your online presence on Google. This includes both search results and maps served to people by the search engine.

Google automatically generates a profile of your business. This profile is based on information it finds in online sources and on social media.

Claiming and verifying your GMB listing is one of the first steps in local SEO.

Why? Because one of Google’s goal is to help people find relevant businesses close to where they are located. If I’m searching for ‘dentists’ and I live in Zürich, a dentist in Lugano isn’t going to be of much help to me.

Also, it increases the chances of appearing in search results for customers close to you.

Therefore, a good GMB listing should acts as a shortcut to them contacting and doing business with you.

Consider this fact, 50% of people who conduct a local search visit a store the next day.

Can you afford not to use a tool that gives you more local visibility?

Why Should Swiss SMEs Use GMB?

Now you might be asking yourself why Swiss businesses bother with Google My Business. I mean aside from the fact that it’s a great way to improve your local SEO. And that it’s 100% free!

The answer is simple — to avoid sabotage!

You see the thing about Google My Business is that ANYONE can edit your listing. This includes your competition and people who have a grudge against you.

Google My Business Listings Can Be Edited - Swiss Digital Marketers

Unscrupulous competitors and criminals have been targeting GMB listings for years. If you don’t take control of yours and check it on a monthly basis, you could lose out on new customer and more revenue.

If you think I’m exaggerating, think about this. Everybody uses Google to find information. What would happen to your business when key information is manipulated?

Scammers can change your phone number. To send customers to your competition or to defraud them of their money while pretending to be you.

Or, they can make it look like your store, restaurant or business is closed during peak business hours.

Having a Google My Business listing is no longer a choice. It’s a necessity.

The 3 Keys To Successful GMB Listings

Once you’ve claimed your Google My Business listing, there’s a couple of things you can do to make it stand out.

First of all, you need to log into your GMB dashboard at least once a month. Just to make sure nobody has made any inaccurate or incorrect changes to your listing.

Google is supposed to notify you when changes are made to your listing. But, unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.

So check your listing often to make sure all your business information is correct. Remember, “Vertrauen ist gut, Kontrolle ist besser!

Secondly, fill out as much information in your listening as you can. Make sure that no category is left empty. Google thrives on information, the more you give it, the better it will treat you.

Lastly, include as many photos in your listing as you can. Have relevant, professional photos taken that represent your brand, products, and services well. Also, don’t forget to optimize them before you upload.

This helps a lot as many people will click through to your site based on curiosity after seeing a good photo.

Closing Thoughts

Google My Business is a powerful, free tool to get more out of your local SEO efforts.

By claiming your profile, you’ll improve your visibility on local search results.

Furthermore, by having control over your GMB listing, you can protect yourself. Don’t let sabotage by ruthless competitors and criminals make you lose business.

We believe that every Swiss business should have a GMB listing. Go ahead and claim yours today!

Great share Bertrand. I feel it is not correct that Google is not taking full responsibility. I was not aware about this what you wrote:

I believe if someone violates this he belongs to the jail and Google needs to provide to the police all data
